STEPS to make sure you are eligible for PGWP (Post Graduate Work Permit)

Post Graduate Work permit refusals are at all time high and most of these refusals can be avoided. Here are the 15 simple tips which you can follow to avoid the same:


  1. Make sure the school and the program in which you are studying or going to study is eligible for the post-graduate work permit. You can check the same on the IRCC website.
  2. Attend the PGWP workshops at your school: No matter how busy you are, you must attend PGWP workshops at your school in order to learn as early as possible.
  3. You need to maintain your full-time student status during each semester except for the final one.
  4. Students should try to finish their study program in the time allotted for the program or study permit expiry date.
  5. Avoid changing institutions or programs of study frequently unless unavoidable.
  6. If you are changing a program of study or institution, then there should not be a gap of more than 90 days in resuming the studies.
  7. Do not work on or off campus if you are on leave or changing your school.
  8. Change your Designated Learning Institution online on your IRCC account if you have changed your designated institution.
  9. Do not start working after arriving in Canada if your studies have not commenced.
  10. Students must stop working once they receive in written from their educational institution that they finished or graduated from their study program until then they can work part-time if meet other study permit regulations.
  11. If your study permit expires, then also you must stop working unless you have applied for a study permit extension.
  12. You must apply for Post Graduate work permit before the study permit expiry and within 180 days of your graduation.
  13. Apply PGWP with official transcripts only and it must states credential awarded or graduated.
  14. Avoid applying PGWP with just a graduation letter from your educational institution as IRCC would like to see your official transcripts.
  15. You can start working full time only after applying for the post-graduate work permit.
