Canada welcomed more than 400,000 new #internationalstudents at all study levels in 2019, with Indian student enrolments accounting for the majority of the increase in new study permits issued.

Canada welcomed 341,000 newcomers in 2019, a number that exceeded its federal government immigration target by 10,000 additional newcomers. Indians, who became permanent residents in 2019, accounted for 25 percent of all the newcomers who came to Canada. China was second, accounting for 9 percent and Philippines accounted for 8 percent of the new immigrants. Canada, in 2020 could welcome up to 360,000 newcomers.

British Columbia held the second Tech Pilot draw of this month on February 11 and invited 83 Immigration candidates. A total of 85 invitations were issued to the tech workers in the Skilled Worker and Express Entry BC categories during the first draw, held on February 4. In both draws, all the candidates needed a minimum provincial score of 90. Tech Pilot Program is BC’s fast track Immigration Pathway for in-demand tech workers, in one of the 29 eligible listed occupations. Applicants are evaluated and given score on basis of their level of education, English proficiency, employment factors and work experience.

Canada had a major year in international student recruitment as 404,000 new Study Permits were issued in 2019. The number of study permits issued is a different metric from the total number of international students in Canada.

India remains the leading international student source country in 2019, with 140,000 study permits issued, accounting for 35 percent of all the study permits issued followed by Chinese and South Korean nationals, who received 85,000 (21 percent) and 17,000 (4 percent) study permits respectively.
