Higgs Highlights N.B.’s Readiness to Build on Ongoing Success
Strengthening After the Pandemic
Premier Blaine Higgs emphasized that New Brunswick has emerged from the pandemic stronger than anticipated. He highlighted swift vaccine rollout and population growth, which have bolstered confidence in the province’s recovery. Financial institutions have also praised its balanced approach to economic revitalization.
Investment and Job Creation
Private investment is projected to exceed $4 billion this year. Among notable developments, a major retail chain is investing $56 million in a new facility in Moncton, set to create 200 jobs.
Immigration Gains & Support Initiatives
The province recently passed 800,000 residents, welcoming over 8,400 newcomers in a calendar year—surpassing immigration targets across skilled trades, francophone newcomers, and international students. To build on this momentum, a new immigration support service for employers and newcomers will be launched.
Budget Highlights & Services
The latest budget allocates increased funding for health care, education, and environmental protection. Efforts to reduce surgical wait times are already underway with new hires of nurse practitioners and other healthcare professionals.
Property Tax Relief & Rent Control
A 50% reduction in provincial property tax for rental buildings and a one-year rent increase cap were introduced to improve housing affordability. The budget anticipates a modest $35 million surplus for the 2022–23 fiscal year.
Promoting Tourism & Local Spending
New Brunswick’s “Explore NB” travel incentive program drove over $20 million in local spending. Building on that success, the province will launch a new tourism campaign encouraging residents to invite friends and family to visit—hoping they stay longer, perhaps even make New Brunswick home.
